When you fill up a world you need to fill it up properly. You cannot just craft a story focused on just that one interesting person. You need to create a world filled with life. Life so vivid you can touch it and believe somewhere out there it exists. One trick to achieve this illusion of a reality is to craft a world with unforgettable personas. Charles Dickens was the king of vivid worlds.  I have tried to achieve a similar effect in some of my stories, sometimes with little to no success. Recently I have found this article from io9. It helped me understand how to craft a better, more vivid world. I hope it can do the same for you.
